Anjali Kumar Kurani handles intellectual property and complex commercial disputes
for a variety of clients with a specific emphasis in the technology, biotechnology and
financial communities. Anjali has represented a broad range of clients in a variety of
legal disputes involving contract issues, defamation claims, patent infringement suits and
federal class action securities cases. Anjali frequently appears for hearings in both
federal and state courts, has been involved in numerous depositions and preparations for
trial, including handling experts, witnesses, graphics and motion practice. Anjali also has
transactional experience with intellectual property licensing, technology transfers, royalty
arrangements (including cross-collateralization) and employment/labor law and
counseling.
Anjali obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Pennsylvania and a
Bachelor of Science degree for the Wharton School of Finance in 1999. While at
Wharton, Anjali received a comprehensive business education and focused on
Management - Information Systems, including coursework in computer science and
programming.
Prior to joining the firm, Anjali worked on a variety of intellectual property and
commercial disputes in the San Francisco office of Fenwick & West LLP, including a
copyright infringement case, a securities class action suit, an SEC investigation, a video
game merger and an international patent arbitration and litigation. Prior to law school,
Anjali spent one year as an IT consultant outside of Washington D.C. working as an
outside contractor for the Department of Defense to develop and deploy proprietary
software for defense installations worldwide.
Notable Engagements
Following are examples of cases Anjali has handled.
- Argued before the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, receiving
a landmark victory for the rights of indigent pro se civil plaintiffs. Agyeman v.
Corrections Corp. of America, 390 F.3d 1101 (9th Cir. 2004).
- Represented a notable anti-spam block list owner against the self-proclaimed
"King of Spam" against a spurious TRO, Can-Spam, defamation and tortious
interference claims. The litigation resulted in an overturning of the TRO and a
settlement out of court. Optinrealbig.com, LLC v. Ironport Systems, Inc., 323
F.Supp.2d 1037 (N.D.Cal. 2004).
- Represented university patent owner and exclusive licensee in patent infringement
both in the Northern District of California and the European Patent Office.
- Assisted in the defense and successful litigation of a class action securities fraud
case of a major technology company arising out of the dot-com bust of 2001-
2002.
- Advised corporate clients regarding strategy to resolve copycat purported class
action litigation at the initial pleading stages. Participated in settlement
negotiations to resolve the case. Battaglia v. DirectRevenue, LLC, 2006 WL
3654095 (E.D. Cal. 2006).
- Defended trademark owner against infringement of his mark through another
corporate entity; drafted the trademark co-existence agreement and settlement
agreement to resolve litigation.
- Defended providers of internet advertising and direct marketing services against a
major social networking site in an action alleging Can-Spam violations and
breach of contract.
- Investigated and litigated entities counterfeiting a major fashion outlet's
copyrights and trademarks. Chanel, Inc. v. Tshimanga, 2008 WL 1897686
(N.D.Cal. Apr 28, 2008).
- Engaged in aggressive defense of video game owner's trademark against film
companies, major studios and other entertainment portals in advance of the
game's release.
- Advised clients on employment matters, shareholders rights, and limitations of
Board actions to avoid litigation, as well as provided advice concerning
corporations' obligations to former majority stakeholders.
